Murray State first baseman Wes Cunningham received his third All-America honor when he was named a Pro-Line Athletic/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Third-Team All-America, the publication announced Wednesday. Cunningham was also named to the third team by Collegiate Baseball and the second team by Ping !Baseball.
The 2010 Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year finished the season hitting .408 with 95 hits, 19 doubles, six triples, 22 home runs, 86 RBIs, 77 runs scored, 192 total bases and a .824 slugging percentage. He set new MSU single-season marks for hits, triples, home runs, RBIs, runs scored total bases and slugging percentage, while setting new OVC records for RBIs and total bases.
Heading into the College World Series, Cunningham ranks second in the nation in RBIs per game (1.51), fourth in RBIs, fourth in slugging percentage, fifth in total bases, 11th in runs per game (1.35), runs and home runs per game (0.39), and 12th in home runs.
Cunningham enjoyed success throughout his Thoroughbred career. He finished his career with a .399 average, 161 runs scored, 237 hits, 14 triples, 35 home runs, 169 RBIs, 406 total bases and a .684 slugging percentage. He is the school’s career leader in batting average, hits, triples, RBIs and total bases, while ranking second in runs and fifth in home runs.
Cunningham, who was drafted in the 17th round by the San Diego Padres, will make his professional debut Friday evening when the Eugene Emeralds play host to the Vancouver Canadians.
