Box Score

The Murray State women's soccer team collected its first victory of the 2010 season Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 overtime win against Alabama A&M in the closing match of the Racer Classic.

Senior Laken Dirkes scored on a breakaway off a through ball past mid-field from teammate Hanna Moellerstad after 29 seconds of play in the overtime session.

The breakthrough came after the Racers were blanked in regulation after firing 29 shots with 17 shots-on-goal.

“Today’s game was one of those games where nothing would go into the net,” head coach Beth Acreman said. “We hit the post, we hit the keeper, and we hit everybody except the inside of the net. It was really tough for us against Alabama A&M so it was nice for us to score that goal in overtime to finish the game.”

Kalli McCoy and Shauna Wicker combined to give MSU (1-1-2) its first near scoring attempts in the 28th minute. McCoy’s shot attempt from the center of the box was deflected by Alabama A&M keeper Linda Aboagye to Wicker, who’s shot was caught by Aboagye from the ground.

McCoy had a chance on net three minutes later on a breakaway down the left side, but her shot hit the outside of the post and deflected away.

Maja Nordahl narrowly missed her second goal of the weekend as she found the left post in the 73rd minute.

Nordahl and Wright led Murray State with five shots apiece as 11 different Racers tallied at least one shot.

MSU held the Bulldogs to six shots, five coming after halftime. Goalkeeper Tara Isbell recorded her third shutout of the season in four matches with two saves.

The Racers out-cornered Alabama A&M (0-4-0) by an 8-3 advantage.

The match was delayed for nearly 45 minutes in the first half due to lightning.

Murray State hits the road next weekend, traveling to Tulsa Sept. 3 for a 7:35 p.m. contest and 1:00 p.m. match on Sept. 5 against Oklahoma State. The Racers continue non-conference action Sept. 10 at home against IPFW.
