The Murray State women's basketball team opened the 2011-12 season with a 76-61 win over Evansville at the CFSB Center. The win marked the third-straight season that the Racers (1-0) have been victorious in their first game of the year and the second-straight to do so at home.
MSU was led by red-shirt sophomore Erica Burgess. In her first game with the Racers, Burgess tallied a team-best 18 points and nine assists, while shooting .500 (7-of-14) from the floor. Junior Mariah Robinson added 13 points and freshman Ashleigh McBean added a team-high 10 rebounds.
Senior Kayla Lowe hit the first shot for either team with 18:35 left in the first half. The shot gave MSU the lead for the rest of the game and started a 13-2 run over the next 6:30. The Purple Aces (0-1) made its first run, starting with 7:45 to play. UE went on a 15-3 run over the next 3:30 to cut the advantage to four (28-24). However, the Racers finished the first half with an 11-2 run to take a 39-28 lead into the locker room.
The second half was more of the same, with the Purple Aces cutting the lead to nine in the first few minutes of the half. MSU then pushed the tempo of the game and increased the lead to as many as 20 points, with just under two minutes to play and held on to win 76-61.
The Racers played 13 players during the game, with 11 recording 10-or-more minutes of action. MSU shot .366 from the field (30-of-82) and .257 (9-of-35) from beyond the three-point line, with UE hitting 40 percent (20-of-50) of their shots and 38.9 percent of those from beyond the arc (7-of-18). The Purple Aces also earned a slight 44-47 rebounding advantage. A key for the Racers was the 31 turnovers they forced UE to commit, while only garnering 13 of their own.
The Racers will continue the 2011-12 season with their first road game, Monday, Nov. 14 at Indiana at 6 p.m. (CST) in Assembly Hall. MSU will then return home to the CFSB Center for a Nov. 17 game against Mid-Continent.
Notes: The Racers are now 21-19 in home openers and 18-27 in season openers.
