Racers continue to receive postseason honors
Five members of the Murray State football were recognized Friday as they were selected to the All-Commonwealth Team, as selected by the Kentucky Chapter of the National Football League Players Association. Wid receiver Marcus Harris, punt returner Dontrell Johnson and kicker Kienan Cullen were selected to the first team, while quarterback Casey Brockman and running back Mike Harris were honorable mention selections.
Marcus Harris (North St. Louis, Mo.) put together one of the finest single-season performances in school history. He hauled in 84 passes for 1.057 yards and nine touchdowns, in only nine games. His efforts did not go unnoticed as he was named a Second-Team All-America by the Associated Press and The Sports Network, as well as third-team honors from Phil Steele Magazine. Marcus Harris led the FCS in receptions per game (9.33), while ranking second in yards per game (117.4).
Johnson (Moultrie, Ga.) was electrifying in the return game, as he set a school record by returning two punts for touchdowns, while leading the FCS with a 22.80 yard average per return. He helped turn the season around with a 91-yard punt return in the victory over UT Martin, and later nearly helped the Racers upset Jacksonville State with a 70-yard return in the fourth quarter. Johnson was selected as a Second-Team All-America by The Sports Network and Phil Steele Magazine, as well as the National Elite Punt Returner by the College Football Performance Awards.
Cullen (Louisville, Ky.) earned All-Ohio Valley Conference honors after going 15-for-23 on field goals, while averaging 40.8 yards on 48 punts. He went 6-for-9 on field goals over 40 yards, including kicking career-best 43-yarders against Central Arkansas, Eastern Illinois and Eastern Kentucky.
Brockman (Murray, Ky.) made the most of his time as the Racers starting quarterback as his first three starts resulted in setting new single-game records for pass attempts, completions, yards and touchdowns. In six starts, Brockman went 213-for-320 for 2, 442 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also ran for 292 yards and seven scores. Brockman's first start resulted in the sophomore being named the National Offensive Player of the Week by CFPA, as he went 32-for-41 for 570 yards and seven touchdowns as the Racers defeated Missouri State 72-59 in the highest scoring game in FCS history.
Mike Harris (Tulsa, Okla.) was the catalyst of the Racer ground attack as the junior rushed for 904 yards and 10 touchdowns in nine games. He racked up four 100-yard games and a pair of 200-yard games, including a career-best 242 yards in a victory over Tennessee Tech. Mike Harris was honored by being named to the OVC First Team.
The Racers finished the 2010 season with a record of 6-5, marking their first winning season since 2004.
