The Margaret Simmons Female Athlete of the Year award is given to the female student athlete that best demonstrates the characteristics of former Murray State track and field coach Margaret Simmons, how well they influenced and inspired other student-athletes and how they represent the university.
Lagerborg has a 3.26 GPA in International Business and is currently the team captain for the women's golf team. The Alta, Sweden native has helped her team claim back-to-back OVC Championships and two-straight trips to the NCAA Tournament. In October 2010, Lagerborg won the Austin Peay Invitational.
“Caroline has the trait of perseverance,” said head coach Velvet Milkman. “She is small in stature (only four feet ten inches tall) and it can be difficult to compete in Division I college athletics at this size. However, Caroline will not be deterred. I have the utmost respect for what she has accomplished during her career at Murray State and know she will be successful in any endeavor she pursues. She is the type of athlete that does not come along very often and is a coach's dream to have as a member of the team.”
Lagerborg's accomplishments also spill into the classroom, as she has been named to the Murray State Dean's List, the National Golf Coaches All-Scholar Golf Team and the OVC Commissioner's Honor roll. She is also member of the Phi Beta Delta Honor Society for International Scholars.
