With their exhibition trip to Toronto just around the corner, the Murray State men's basketball squad started the first of 10 practices they'll have before playing three exhibition games starting Aug. 5.
It marked the first time new head coach Steve Prohm, new assistant coaches and new players had the chance to stage a practice.
MSU's' first foreign tour since 2005 makes for an unusual July for the Racers' program.
“It's a great opportunity, but it's a busy month,” Prohm said. “We've got July recruiting, the kids are taking summer classes and we're starting practice. It's a great opportunity to get out here and work these guys out and for them to learn and get closer as a team.”
As the Racers took to the CFSB Center floor Tuesday afternoon, there was a sense of excitement not only because it was the first time the team was together in a practice setting, but also because it was rare to be practicing at this time of the year. Team practices usually begin in mid October.
Per NCAA rules, the Racers can take a foreign trip once every four years and student-athletes can participate only once in their collegiate careers.
“It's new, we have four incoming freshman so we're all looking forward to getting the first practice going,” MSU senior, Donte Poole said. “It is different getting to practice in July. I think it's good for us to get together and get this started.”
The Racers will make their way to Toronto, Ontario for a set of three exhibition games. Game one is against Brock University (Aug. 5) and followed by games (Aug. 7) against A-Game Hoops and another (Aug. 8) against the ABA Canada All-Stars.
