After the defense had the upper hand the previous few days, the Murray State offense showed why it has potential to be a record-setting unit as they dominated practice Friday morning inside Stewart Stadium.
“The offense had the defense's number today and as a coach that is good and bad,” said Hatcher. “But, the defense has pretty much been dominating up to today and I could tell our intensity level defensively was not where it has been the last several days. The offense really had their way with some great runs by Mike Harris and Duane Brady. Casey Brockman did a good job with his feet, buying some time, and making some good throws.”
The offense received some good news as running back Duane Brady and wide receiver Ja-Vonta Trotter returned to practice after sitting out the past few days with injuries.
Mike Harris got the Racers going on the first play by bursting up the middle for a 45-yard gain. He later capped the five-play drive by fighting his way in from seven yards out.
The second-team offense also only needed five plays to score as Brady converted a third-and-long by catching a screen pass and making a player miss for 20 yards. Nevar Griffin capped the drive with a 27-yard touchdown catch from Graham Craig.
The first-team offense returned to the field for another five-play drive that ended with Ja-Vonta Trotter hauling in a 14-yard touchdown pass from Brockman.
The defense finally made a stop as Zack Ross batted down a pass on the first play and Ryan Walker recorded a sack to force the three-and-out. The duo of Walker and Tyler Evans combined on a sack to force the end to another drive.
Brockman showed his scrambling ability on his next drive as he eluded pressure and rolled to the right where he found Brady for a 20-yard touchdown.
Practice ended with the ball being placed on the two and the offense was able to score on three of the four possessions, with Trotter closing practice by outrunning the defense to the pylon for the score.
The Racers will return to the field this evening at 6 p.m., before breaking camp tomorrow with a scrimmage at 10 a.m. at Stewart Stadium.
