The Murray State football team conducted its first practice of the 2011 season Wednesday morning on the turf at Stewart Stadium. The practice was the first of three practices in helmets only.
“It was a typical first day for us,” said head coach Chris Hatcher. “We had a lot of new players out there that really didn't know where to go and what type of tempo we were going to play. I saw some good things and we competed well. We were rusty at some things and that was understood. Our goal is to be ready to play Sept. 1. We have a lot of time between now and then to get there.”
The Racers battled through the heat that his this area for the past 20 days. Players received plenty of fluids throughout practice and will continue to hydrate throughout the day, leading into tomorrow's practice.
“I thought it was a good day,” said quarterback Casey Brockman. “Obviously it was hot and some of the guys struggled with getting acclimated with the heat. Both sides of the ball had their moments at times, and struggled at times. We have plenty of time to get all that corrected, and overall, I think it was a pretty good day.”
The Racers return to practice Thursday morning at 9:10 a.m. All practices are open to the public.
