The Murray State soccer team jumped feet first into getting ready for the 2011 season with the Blue/Gold Scrimmage Saturday night at Cutchin Field.
After opening preseason camp early Friday morning, the eight returners and 12 newcomers on head coach Beth Acreman's squad got its first taste of competitive action this season in a 60 minute game featuring two 30 minute halves.
Freshman Julie Mooney scored the first goal of the game for the team in road blues, but the match was soon tied at 1-1 on Veronika Pribyslavska's equalizer as she saw her first action since missing all of last season.
Although Acreman knows her team has some work to do in the next few weeks, she's already beginning to see good things develop after the first two days of practice.
"First days of practice have been great, the girls are training very hard,” Acreman said. “With 12 new players trying to integrate them into our system and the way we train here at Murray State will be a challenge in the next week before our first scrimmage next week, but we're seeing personalities start to come together as we've got some really good new players mixed in with our returners that are very determined to have some success."
The Racers have a pair of exhibitions on the schedule over the next week and a half, traveld to UT-Chattanooga Aug. 13 and hosting Bethel at 3 p.m. Aug. 15 before the first regular season game against Ball State on Aug. 19 in Bowling Green, Ky.
