Murray State head football coach Chris Hatcher announced the hiring of former Alabama standout linebacker Freddie Roach as the new defensive line coach for the Racers.
Roach comes to MSU after spending the 2011 season as the defensive line coach at East Mississippi Community College. He helped the Lions to a perfect 12-0 record and the National Junior College Athletic Association national championship.
“Freddie brings a wealth of championship experience to our staff,” said Hatcher. “He has been successful at all levels of his career and I expect him to be a great fit to our coaching staff.”
Prior to his time at EMCC, Roach spent two seasons working as an assistant in the strength and conditioning depart at Alabama. He was a member of the Crimson Tide's 2009 BCS National Championship team.
Roach was a four-year letterman for UA and ended his career as the school's 10th all-time leading tackler with 272 total tackles. He started 40 games and registered 151 solo tackles, 25 tackles-for-loss, four sacks, 17 quarterback pressures, 15 pass break-ups, six forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.
After red-shirting his first year, Roach returned an interception 41 yards in his first collegiate game against Middle Tennessee. He went on to start 10 games that season and was named to the 2002 Scripps/FWAA Freshman All-America Team.
Roach went on to be a two-time Associated Press Second-Team All-SEC selection, as well as the recipient of the 2005 Lee Roy Jordan Headhunter Award as a senior. He capped his collegiate career by being chosen to play in the 2006 Senior Bowl. He was also selected to Alabama's All-Decade Team of the 2000's as compiled by the 'BAMA Magazine and BamaMag.com.
He went to sign as a free agent with the New England Patriots, but suffered an injury during training camp.
Roach graduated from UA with a bachelor's degree in human environmental sciences.
