Volleyball To Wrap-Up Non-Conference Slate With Southern Illinois

The Murray State volleyball team will play its final non-conference match of the season on Tuesday night when it hosts Southern Illinois at Racer Arena at 7 p.m.
The Racers (3-10, 1-3 OVC) suffered another setback on Saturday, when they fell in straight sets to league-leader Morehead State, 26-17, 29-27, 25-9. Murray State's best chance in the match came in the second set, during which they a held a 20-10 lead at one point. However, from that point on the Eagles outscored MSU 44-16 over the final two sets to take the three-set victory.
Freshman Taylor Olden (Lincoln, Ill.) led the Racers in kills for the eighth time this season with 11, while senior Lia Havili (Haltom City, Texas) had 27 assists. Defensively junior Katlyn Hudson (Columbus, Ind.) had 11 digs, while freshman Alyssa Lelm (Mackinaw, Ill.) had five total blocks.
Tuesday's match will serves as the final of nine non-conference matches this season and will be the first one this year to be played at Racer Arena. Through nine non-conference matches, Murray State has won two, already a marked improvement over last season.
Scouting The Opponent:
Southern Illinois (13-3, 4-2 MVC): The Salukis are coming off of a big weekend where they took care of conference foes Creighton and Drake in pair of 3-1 victories. Southern Illinois has lost just three matches this season and have won 13 of their last 15. Senior Alysia Mayes (Ashkum, Ill.) currently leads SIU in all three major offensive categories with 212 kills, 3.79 kills per set and a .400 hitting percentage. As a team, the Salukis are hitting .255, compared to just .159 by their opponents.
The Series: The Salukis currently hold an 11-2 all-time lead in the series, but are just 2-2 at Racer Arena. SIU has won the last five meetings between the two schools, with the last Racer win coming on Oct. 14, 2003 in Murray.
Adding To The Trophy Case: Several Racers have racked up honors this season for their performances in early season tournaments. Taylor Olden received All-Tournament honors for her performance at both the LaQuinta Inn & Suites Highlander Invitational and West Virginia's Gold & Blue Classic, while Emily Schmahl was named to the Hyatt Place Fort Wayne/IPFW Invitational All-Tournament Squad. After capturing the LaQuinta Inn & Suites Highlander Invitational tournament championship as a team, Lia Havili was named as the event's most valuable player.
