The Murray State volleyball team will set out on its final road trip of the season on Tuesday when it travels to Clarksville for a showdown with Austin Peay at 7 p.m.
The Racers are coming off a huge win on Saturday in which they topped UT Martin, 3-1. Murray State is now 5-19 on the year and 3-11 in the OVC.
Freshman Emily Schmahl currently leads the Racer offense with 221 kills, 2.95 kills per set and an attack percentage of .170. Also playing a big role this season for MSU offensively is senior Wendi Zickfield. Zickfield currently has 135 kills, a team-best attack percentage of .219 and has notched three consecutive double-doubles.
Defensively, junior Katlyn Hudson paces the unit with 26 digs, while freshman Jodie Klein and senior Lydia Orf follow closely behind with 214 and 198, respectively. Freshman Alyssa Lelm has been a big force at the nets for MSU this season with 89 total blocks and is currently moving her way up the single-season block record charts for the program.
Scouting The Opponent:
Austin Peay (16-14, 9-5 OVC): The Lady Govs enter tonight on a bit of tear, having won three in a row. Austin Peay won both of their matches last weekend, against UT Martin and SEMO, and are currently in a three-way tie for the third-seed in the upcoming OVC tournament. Currently leading the Lady Govs' offense is Nikki Doyle who has 404 total kills, 3.67 kills per set and an attack percentage of .235. Defensively, Jada Stotts leads APSU with 322 total digs as well as 40 total blocks.
The Series: Austin Peay currently leads the all-time series 33-31 and also lead the Racers in Clarksville, 15-11. The Lady Govs have won the last six meeting in the series including a 3-1 win in Murray on Sep. 25. The last time MSU won at the Dunn Center in Clarksville was over four years ago on Oct. 3, 2008, when they topped Austin Peay 3-2.
Members Only: On Friday, senior Lydia Orf notched a career-high 25 digs to become the 14th member of the Murray State 1,000 dig club. She now has 1,022 career digs and 198 on the year. She is the first Racer to join the club since Kayleah Sauer and Cassie Chesney became members during the 2009 season.
Block It Like It's Hot: Freshman Alyssa Lelm is making a name for herself when it comes to blocking this season. She currently ranks second in the OVC in league matches with 1.19 blocks per set and is fifth in all matches with 1.05. She now 10th all-time on the Racers' single-season total block lists with 89 and 10th on the block assists list with 69. Lelm needs four total blocks to move into ninth on that list and two assists two move into eighth on that list.
Adding To The Trophy Case: Several Racers have racked up honors this season for their performances in early season tournaments. Taylor Olden received All-Tournament honors for her performance at both the LaQuinta Inn & Suites Highlander Invitational and West Virginia's Gold & Blue Classic, while Emily Schmahl was named to the Hyatt Place Fort Wayne/IPFW Invitational All-Tournament Squad. After capturing the LaQuinta Inn & Suites Highlander Invitational tournament championship as a team, Lia Havili was named as the event's most valuable player.
