The Murray State volleyball team will officially close the books on their 2012 campaign on Saturday, when they host Eastern Kentucky at Racer Arena at 2 p.m.
Prior to the match, seniors Molly Goodrich, Lia Havili, Lydia Orf and Wendi Zickfield will be honored for their accomplishments as part of Senior Day.
The Racers are coming off of a tough loss on Tuesday, when they fell to Austin Peay, 3-0, in Clarksville.
Freshmen Emily Schmahl and Taylor Olden currently lead the MSU offense with 223 kills, with Schmahl hitting at .169 and Olden hitting at .139. Senior Wendi Zickfield is currently boasting the best hitting percentage on the team at .200. Junior Katlyn Hudson is currently pacing the defense with 263 digs, while freshman Alyssa Lelm has 90 blocks.
Scouting The Opponent:
Eastern Kentucky (9-18, 5-10 OVC): The Colonels come into today's game needing a win to at least give them a shot in advancing to the OVC tournament. Eastern Kentucky is currently on a three-match skid, most recently falling at Morehead State, 0-3, on Tuesday. Ashley Edmond currently leads the EKU offense with 309 total kills and 3.19 per set, while Dena Ott paces the defense with 536 digs.
The Series: The Racers currently lead the all-time series 31-29 and 16-9 at Racer Arena. The Colonels won the last meeting on Nov. 4, 2011 in Richmond, but previous to that, Murray State had won the previous three. The Racers have won the last six meetings at Racer Arena and have not lost at home since Oct. 28, 2005.
Can I Help You With That?: In just two years with the Racers, Lia Havili will leave Murray with her name etched in the record books. Through almost two season, Havili has tallied 1,598 assists in just 53 matches, placing her ninth on the MSU all-time assist list.
Members Only: Last Friday, senior Lydia Orf notched a career-high 25 digs to become the 14th member of the Murray State 1,000 dig club. She now has 1,036 career digs and 212 on the year. She is the first Racer to join the club since Kayleah Sauer and Cassie Chesney became members during the 2009 season.
Block It Like It's Hot: Freshman Alyssa Lelm is making a name for herself when it comes to blocking this season. She currently ranks third in the OVC in league matches with 1.14 blocks per set and is fifth in all matches with 1.02. She now 10th all-time on the Racers' single-season total block lists with 90 and 10th on the block assists list with 70. Lelm needs three total blocks to move into ninth on that list and one assist to move into eighth on that list.
Adding To The Trophy Case: Several Racers have racked up honors this season for their performances in early season tournaments. Taylor Olden received All-Tournament honors for her performance at both the LaQuinta Inn & Suites Highlander Invitational and West Virginia's Gold & Blue Classic, while Emily Schmahl was named to the Hyatt Place Fort Wayne/IPFW Invitational All-Tournament Squad. After capturing the LaQuinta Inn & Suites Highlander Invitational tournament championship as a team, Lia Havili was named as the event's most valuable player.
