The Murray State track and field squad opened the 2012-13 season on Saturday as the Racers traveled to Carbondale, Ill., for the Southern Illinois Saluki Fast Start. The Racers won a pair of events at the meet and placed second in two others.
All-American Alexis Love picked right up from her amazing 2012 season and took home the 400 meter title for the Racers on Saturday. Love won the event with a time of 57.36. Love also ran the fastest time in the prelims of the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.59 but did not compete in the finals.
Sharda Bettis took home the other title for MSU on Saturday. Bettis won the 60 meter-hurdles with a time of 8.63 and also ran a new career-best time of 8.59 in the preliminary race. Bettis also ran a new PR in the 60, finishing in third place with a time of 7.83.
Emma Gilmore took second place in the mile for the Racers. Gilmore ran a time of 5:17.37 in the race. Ashley Conway also placed second for Murray State in the high jump. Conway tied her personal-best in the event with a leap of 5-6.
LaShea Shaw also had a nice meet for the Racers. Shaw set new PR's in the 60 and 60-meter hurdles on Saturday. Shaw placed fifth with a time of 7.89 in the 60 meter dash and was third in the hurdles, running a time of 8.84.
In the triple jump, MSU finished in fourth- and fifth-place from Kiara Austin and Hallie Holloway, respectively. Austin had a leap of 37-8 in the event, while Holloway set a new personal-high with a leap of 37-4. Tonia Pratt finished sixth in the weight throw with a throw of 55-5.75.
Saturday was the final meet in 2012 for the Racers as they will take a break for the holiday season. Murray State will return to action in 2013 when it travels back to Southern Illinois on January 11 for the Saluki Open.
