The Murray State Racers recorded a 75-66 win Saturday at Southeast Missouri State at the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo., and wrapped up the outright Ohio Valley Conference regular season championship for the third straight season.
The victory for MSU (25-1) gives them a third straight outright title for the first time since 1992. The Racers have won 23 overall OVC regular season titles, the most in the history of the league.
The Racers got a game-high 25 points from Donte Poole on 7-of-13 shooting including 4-of-6 from three point range.
It was Poole's big first half that saw him hit all four threes to help the Racers to a 32-22 lead at the half.
In the second half when the Redhawks cut the MSU lead to five with 17:32 remaining, Jewuan Long went to work with back-to-back baskets in a 10-3 run for a 13-point lead with 12:17 left. SEMO got as close as five points with 6:42 left, but the Racers were stellar from the free throw line and hit 9-of-10 to seal a 13-1 league mark.
Ivan Aska added 14 points and nine rebounds to the Racer effort, while Long and Ed Daniel each added 10 points.
The Racers shot 46 percent from the field for the game and limited SEMO to 37 percent. MSU was 22-of-28 from the line for 78 percent.
The 7,125 that watched the Racers play at the Show Me Center marked the first sellout of the arena since 2000 when the Racers were also involved in a big game. The game also marked the first time SEMO had hosted a ranked team.
The Racers started the week ranked 14th in the ESPN/USA Today Poll and 16th in the Associated Press Poll.
Game Notes
The senior trio of Ivan Aska, Jewuan Long and Donte Poole recorded their 98th win tonight which is one win from joining some select company among the winningest classes in MSU history. The most wins for one class is 99 which came from 1996-2000. That class also won four OVC titles and it featured the likes of: Isaac Spencer, Aubrey Reese, Mike Turner and Rod Murray.
Steve Prohm is the eighth straight MSU coach to win at least one OVC regular season title and the fourth rookie head coach following Scott Edgar (1991-92), Mark Gottfried (1995-96) and Tevester Anderson (1998-99).
The Racers now turn their attention to Saturday's BracketBusters game at the CFSB Center against Saint Mary's. The Racers, ranked 16th in the AP Poll and the Gaels ranked 21st, will be the first game to pit ranked teams at the Racers' home court that is in its 14th season. The game will also be the first time that a ranked MSU team will play a ranked opponent at home or away. Legendary announcers Dave O'Brien and Dick Vitale will call the game on ESPN.
