Vote For Canaan - Cousy Award
Murray State's Isaiah Canaan has been named to the list of 11 finalists for the 2012 Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.
The annual honor, named for Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic Bob Cousy, recognizes the top point guards in college basketball. An original list of 60-plus candidates was trimmed by a hall of fame appointed, nationally-based committee.
Canaan's 2011-12 season has been splendid as the junior from Biloxi, Miss., is second in the Ohio Valley Conference and 24th in NCAA D-I with 19.3 points per game. His 47.6 percentage from three-point range is fourth in the nation and he's 13th in the nation with an average of 3.1 made three-point baskets per game. Canaan has 10 games of 20 points or more this season and three of 30 or more.
Canaan is a big part of MSU's 22-0 start to the season which make them the only undefeated team in NCAA D-I. The Racers have risen to no. 9 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll and no. 10 in the Associated Press Poll.
“We're excited that Isaiah has the honor of being one of the Cousy Award finalists,” MSU Head Coach Steve Prohm said. “Isaiah has been a huge part of our success at Murray State, not only this season but in the last two seasons as well.”
Fans are encouraged to visit the Bob Cousy Award's website – www.cousyaward.com – and vote for the top point guard. The player that receives the most fan votes will receive one vote toward the final committee vote. Fan voting will conclude March 6.
The current list of 11 finalists for the Cousy Award will be narrowed down to five on March 8. The final five players in contention for the award will be presented to Mr. Cousy and the selection committee.
The winner of the 2012 Bob Cousy Award will be awarded (April 2) in New Orleans, La., as part of NCAA Final Four weekend.
