During the Baylor-Kansas basketball game January 16, 2012, Dick Vitale was quoted saying “You take a look at Murray State, what a great job they're doing. I would love one time to go down there to do a game, to see those young kids”.
Instantly, the Murray State social media outlets exploded with excitement and a “Bring Dickie V to Murray” campaign began.
In an effort to get the Hall of Fame college basketball analyst to Murray State's Bracket Buster game Saturday, February 18 against St. Mary's, Murray State Athletics is asking Racer fans to participate in a number of causes.
“This has been an exciting time for Racer fans and through their passion and participation, Dick Vitale is bound to make an appearance in Murray,” said Director of Marketing and Promotions Morris White. “Our atmosphere has been tremendous at games and one that Dickie V would appreciate.”
Fans who have a Twitter account are asked to use the hashtag #BringDickieVtoMurray in their tweets. Those interested in following Dick Vitale on Twitter can do so @DickieV. On Facebook, athletics has posted a special graphic of Dickie V and fans are asked to change their profile pictures to that graphic until Feb. 18.
Additionally, the Murray State Campus Activities Board and Student Government Association held a letter signing campaign on campus. Students were encouraged to sign a letter to ESPN asking for Dick Vitale's presence. Over 140 letters were signed and mailed.
Prior to the game against Southeast Missouri, university communications filmed fans as they gave their best Vitale impersonations while they waited in line. To see those impersonations click here. Those impersonations will be placed on Murray State's social media outlets this week. The athletic marketing and promotions department created a Dick Vitale 'big head' that was the topic of discussion during the game and fans begun to make signs to show their support. The Stampede, the official student section for athletics, chanted “We want Dickie” and “Dickie V” at the conclusion of the game and there's even a shout out to Dickie V in the Murray State Anthem, a song created by MSU students known as Trubz and Matlock.
