BOX SCORE
A two-run home run in the sixth inning proved to be the difference as a late Murray State rally came up short in a 2-1 defeat at #16 Kentucky Wednesday afternoon.
The Wildcats (18-0) broke through on the scoreboard in the sixth inning as Cameron Flynn hit his team-leading sixth home run of the season to right field for a 2-0 lead.
The Breds (8-9) used a two-out rally in the eighth to trim the deficit to one. Ty Stetson started the rally with a single through the right side, before scoring on a Travis Isaak double to left center.
MSU threatened again in the ninth inning as a fielding error with two outs extended the inning. Paul Ritzheimer followed with a single to center, but the rally ended right there.
Bryan Babin (1-1) was the tough-luck loser, allowing two runs on seven hits over six innings. Luke Shuemaker continued his strong season as he did not allow a hit over his two shutout innings.
Chandler Shepherd (2-0) earned the victory after allowing no runs on three hits over 5.1 innings. Trevor Gott (3) earned the save after allowing one hit in his one inning.
Isaak led the offense by going 2-for-4 with his team-best seventh double and an RBI. Ritzheimer also collected two hits.
The Breds return to the diamond this weekend as they open a three-game series at Southern Miss. The series gets underway Friday at 6 p.m.
