After an amazing 2011-12 season as a rookie head coach, Murray State's Steve Prohm has been named Basketball Times Coach of the Year.
The news of Prohm's honor came as the Racers were going through their shoot-around before they play Marquette tonight (4:15 p.m. CT) in the third round of the NCAA Tournament at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Ky.
Last May Prohm became the 15th head coach in MSU history and this season was one of 52 first year head coaches in NCAA Division I and one of 24 making this their first season as a head coach.
The Racers started the season 23-0 and were the last undefeated team. They won the Ohio Valley Conference regular season championship for the 23rd time and the OVC Tournament which led to their 15th trip to the NCAA's. MSU was also the only team that didn't lose on the road this season and the first to accomplish the feat in school history.
Prohm was the OVC Coach of the Year and the third rookie coach at MSU history to be so honored.
Prohm's Racers tied the program record of 31 wins with a 58-41 win Thursday over Colorado State in the NCAA Tournament. The 31 wins ties the record set by Prohm's mentor, Billy Kennedy in the 2009-10 season. Kennedy is now the head coach at Texas A&M.
