Murray State head men's basketball coach Steve Prohm has been named the National Basketball Coaches Association District 19 Coach of the Year.
“I'm extremely honored to receive this award from my peers,” Prohm said. “It was an amazing season we had at Murray State and I thank our staff and support staff and especially our players for their efforts all season long.”
Prohm and the Racers had a great season and then some in 2011-12 when they were 31-2 and tied the school record for wins in a single season. MSU won their 23rd Ohio Valley Conference regular season championship and went to the NCAA Tournament for the 15th time after winning the OVC Tournament for a 15th time.
Another aspect to the Racers' season is a feat that may turn out to be a lasting legacy. MSU was the only team in NCAA D-I to go undefeated away from home at 13-0. It's the first time in 87 years of MSU Basketball.
The Racers also had the distinction of being the final undefeated team this season at 23-0.
MSU set program records in the weekly rankings reaching the top-10 in both the Associated Press Poll and the ESPN/USA Today Poll.
last week, the Racers won a game in the NCAA's for the second time in three seasons with a 58-41 win over Colorado State 58-41 (March 15) in Louisville, Ky., and they just missed a trip to the Sweet 16 in a 62-53 defeat to Marquette (March 17). Along the way the Racers had out-of-conference wins over the likes of Southern Miss (In the championship game of the Great Alaska Shootout), Saint Mary's, Memphis, UAB, Dayton and Western Kentucky.
Prohm, who was the third rookie at MSU to be named the Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year, was also named the Basketball Times Coach of the Year last week.
Prohm is the sixth MSU coach to win the NABC award since Ron Green in 1980. Other Racer coaches include: Steve Newton (1988), Mark Gottfried (1997), Tevester Anderson (1999) and Billy Kennedy (2010).
