The Murray State football team went through their first major scrimmage of spring drills Saturday morning at Roy Stewart Stadium in Murray, Ky.
The Racers ran a total of 107 plays in the scrimmage with 79 of them coming on a full field with drives starting at the offense's own 35 yard line.
Racer Head Coach Chris Hatcher was pleased with what he saw out of his team.
“It was a good day for us and I saw good effort,” he said. “Today was unusually hot and we're not in football shape yet, that's not what the spring is about. We got a lot of plays in today and this was our major scrimmage of the spring, although we'll have some smaller days yet this spring. We're playing with a bit of a skeleton crew until the signing class arrives in August. We got a good look today at our two backup quarterbacks.”
The Racers get back on the field Thursday at 3:30 p.m. and still have several workouts planned before they end the spring session with the annual Blue-Gold Bowl at Stewart Stadium on April 14 at 6 p.m.
Scrimmage notes
Over the period of about an hour and 15 minutes, the Racers' scrimmage lasted 79 plays of near continuous play.
Spencer Phillips and Parks Frazier completed their first 6 combined passes.
Duane Brady scored on a 1 yard TD run which was the first scoring drive of the day. 65-yds drive-8 plays.
MSU's defense had three straight three plays and out on the next three possessions. The defense had six stops in the 12 drives that started at the 35 yard line.
Spencer Phillips threw a 1 yard TD strike to John King completing a 65-yd drive in 13 plays.
Julian Whitehead made the only interception of the day off of a tipped pass by Jeff Richard off of Frazier at the 15-yd line. Had it been a real game, it looked like he had a clear path for a return touchdown.
Phillips hit Walter Powell on a 60-yard TD pass play. Powell caught the pass about 10 yards downfield along the sideline, slipped a tackle and scored.
Phillips hit Dontel Watkins on a 30-yard TD pass that completed a 65-yd drive in 10 plays.
