Breds Can’t Hold Early Lead in Loss at #24 Ole Miss

Murray State pushed across four runs in the top of the first inning before #24 Ole Miss seized control and handed the Breds an 11-5 defeat Wednesday evening at Oxford-University Stadium.
The 30-minute rain delay had not affect on the Breds (21-25) bats in the first inning as Ty Stetson singled up the middle, Paul Ritzheimer singled to left and Jacob Rhodes walked to load the bases with no outs. Mike Kozlowski delivered a two-run single to center field before Brandon Eggenschwiler hit a sacrifice fly to left field. A fielding error helped extend the inning and Noah Zipko took advantage with an RBI single through the left side.
The Rebels (30-16) got on the board in the third inning as back-to-back hit put runners on second and third with no outs. Alex Yarbrough drove in the only run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to left field.
OM used a big fourth inning to push across nine runs. A throwing error on a sacrifice bunt pushed across one run and help ignite the inning. The Rebels used four RBI hits and a two-run double off the top of the wall in left field by Zach Kirksey.
MSU pushed across their fifth run in the seventh as Ritzheimer doubled to left center and went to third on a groundout. Eggenschwiler drove him in with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Kyle Cornett (3-3) took the loss after allowing eight runs, five earned, on seven hits over 3.1 innings. Chris Ellis (4-0) earned the victory in relief after allowing just three hits and striking out five over 4.1 shutout innings.
Zipko led the offense with three hits, while Kozlowski delivered two hits and drove in two runs.
The Breds return to action this weekend as they host Eastern Illinois in a key Ohio Valley Conference series at Reagan Field. The series gets underway Friday at 3 p.m., and continues Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
