Murray State put an end to its 2012 preseason camp as the team played two quarters of a scrimmage Friday afternoon at Stewart Stadium. The Racers will get the weekend off before they begin preparation for Florida State on Monday.
The first-team offense saw very limited action, but made the most of their time on the field. On the opening drive, Brockman drove the Racers down the field in eight plays. He started things with a 19-yard connecting with Patrick Robertson, before Duane Brady kept the drive alive with a nine-yard run on 3rd-and-4. On the next play, Brockman found Ja-Vonta Trotter over the middle for a 36-yard touchdown.
Brockman would return for just one more series, finishing the day5-for-7 for 75 yards and a touchdown.
The defense responded by forcing a punt of six of the next seven possessions. The offense was only able to manage a 28-yard field goal from Jordan Benton in that stretch.
Junior college transfer Darian Yahyavi forced the first turnover of the game as he forced a fumble that was recovered by Julian Whitehead. The offense used the short field to its advantage as Spencer Phillips found Dontel Watkins for a 23-yard touchdown.
Senior Jarius Williams made two big plays for the defense as he intercepted a pass and returned it 22 yards for touchdown, before coming back a few drives later and intercepting his second pass off of a deflection.
Watkins caught his second touchdown pass of the game to end the scrimmage as Parks Frazier threw a perfect ball for the 33-yard score. Watkins finished the day with eight catches for 120 yards and a pair of scores.
Freshman Jeremy Harness continued to have a solid camp as he had nine catches for 52 yards. Frazier saw the most action among the quarterbacks as he went 17-for-27 for 121 yards and a touchdown.
Safeties Brandon Wicks and Brandon Hathaway each had a team-high six tackles. Linebacker Blake Salter posted five stops, including 2.5 tackles-for-loss. Freshman Isaiah Farris added tree tackles and three pass break-ups.
The Racers will settle into their normal practice routine on Monday as they begin preparation for their Sept. 1 opener at Florida State. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. and can be seen live on ESPN3.
