The Murray State volleyball team will close out a three game homestand on Tuesday night when it continues OVC play with Austin Peay at 7 p.m. at Racer Arena.
The Racers (3-8, 1-1) opened league action this past weekend with a 3-0 win over Tennessee Tech on Friday, followed by a 3-0 loss to Jacksonville State on Saturday.
Murray State began their 2012 OVC camping by taking down Tennessee Tech in one of its best performances of the season. Freshman Taylor Olden (Lincoln, Ill.) and Emily Schmahl (Edgewood, Ky.) led the Racers in the match with 16 and 15 kills and hitting percentages of .333 and .423, respectively. Junior Katlyn Hudson (Columbus, Ind.) also had a big night as she posted a career-high four service aces. The four aces came amidst a 12-1 run that was put together by the server, Hudson.
On Saturday, the Racers struggled to get their offense going and were topped by a very game Jacksonville State quad. However, the news was not all bad, as sophomore Beth Mahurin (Rockville, Ind.) looked headed towards her late-season form from last year with a team and personal season-high of nine kills.
Tonight's match appears to be even on paper as the two teams are very similar in most major categories. Austin Peay holds a slight edge on offense with 12.65 per set and an attack percentage of .261, while the Racers average 11.68 kills per set and have and attack percentage of .148. On defense, it's Murray State that holds the slight advantage with 1.82 blocks per set, compared to 1.73 by the Governors. When it comes to digs, the two teams are exactly even, with each averaging 14.37 per set.
Scouting The Opponent:
Austin Peay (7-10, 1-1 OVC): The Governors also opened up OVC play last weekend with a win over Tennessee Tech and a loss to Jacksonville State. Sophomore Jada Stotts currently leads the Governors with 223 total kills (3.78 per set) and boast an attack percentage of .219. Stotts also leads the teams in digs with 172 total and 2.92 per set.
The Series: The Governors currently hold a 32-31 advantage all-time over the Racers. However, it is MSU that has the upper hand at matches played at Racer Arena and leads the series in Murray, 17-10. Austin Peay has won the last five meetings between the two teams. Their win on Nov. 14, 2009, put an end to a seven-match win-streak by the Racers.
Adding To The Trophy Case: Several Racers have racked up honors this season for their performances in early season tournaments. Taylor Olden received All-Tournament honors for her performance at both the LaQuinta Inn & Suites Highlander Invitational and West Virginia's Gold & Blue Classic, while Emily Schmahl was named to the Hyatt Place Fort Wayne/IPFW Invitational All-Tournament Squad. After capturing the LaQuinta Inn & Suites Highlander Invitational tournament championship as a team, Lia Havili was named as the event's most valuable player.
Can't Make It To Racer?: There are two ways to follow Murray State volleyball away from Racer Arena for this year's home matches. Both live stats and live video, courtesy of the OVC digital network, will be available for all home matches this season and both options are free to all fans. Live stats can be viewed either on desktop, laptop or most mobile devices. Live Stats vs. Austin Peay OVC Digital Network
"Gold On The Ceiling"... And Everywhere Else: Tonight's game at Racer Arena will be a "Gold Out." All fans are asked to wear gold in support of the Racers. Also tonight, fans will have the opportunity to win prizes between the second and third sets during a game of musical chairs, presented by MSU Marketing and Promotions.
What's Next: The Racers continue OVC action this weekend when they travel west to take on rival Morehead State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
