Post Tournament
Murray State senior golfer Patrick Newcomb came home with rounds of 78-78-81=237, which was good for a 77th place finish at the Jones Cup played Friday through Sunday in Sea Island, Ga., at the Ocean Forest Golf Club.
Newcomb, out of Benton, Ky., was invited to the Jones Cup on his excellent performances over the last two years with the Racers program and on his own. He's the returning Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year and has won the Kentucky Amateur in the last two summers. Newcomb advanced to the quarterfinals of the United State Amateur last summer and was ranked 252nd coming into the Jones Cup in the World Amateur Rankings.
His invitation to the Jones Cup came after he was asked to play in the South Beach International Amateur in Miami, Fla., just before Christmas at the Miami Beach Golf Club.
Newcomb is sure to be in the mix in other national amateur championships moving foward, but now will be with his Racer teammates for their spring season which begins at the Samford Intercollegiate (March 4-5) at Hoover Country Club in Hoover, Ala.
Pre Tournament
Murray State's Patrick Newcomb having played in one of amateur golf's prestigious winter championships is set to play in another before joins his teammates for the spring portion of the 2012-13 season.

The Jones Cup is played at Ocean Forest Golf Club which opened in 1995 and is a Rees Jones design. The course has also hosted such championships as the 1998 Georgia State Amateur, the 1999 Southern Amateur and the 2001 Walker Cup Matches.
Before Christmas, Newcomb was invited to play in the South Beach International Amateur (Dec. 18-21) in Miami, Fla. The Racer senior placed 64th in a field of 74 competitors with scores of 71-71-78-78=298. The South Beach International Amateur was played at Miami Beach Golf Club and Normandy Shores Golf Club.
Newcomb tee off at 8 a.m. CT Friday morning with Thomas Bradshaw and Billy Kennerly.
When Newcomb comes back to MSU after the Jones Cup, he'll prepare with the Racer team for their spring opener at the Samford Intercollegiate (March 4-5) at Hoover Country Club in Hoover, Ala.
