Murray State Student-Athletes Honored for Academic Achievements

During halftime of the men's basketball game on Thursday night, Murray State honored 104 Racer student-athletes who were selected to the Ohio Valley Conference's Commissioner's Honor Roll. Students with a 3.25 GPA or higher qualified for the honor.
Over the course of the last academic year, Racer student-athletes have accomplished a lot in the classroom. Including, 112 student-athletes recognized by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports for maintaining high academics and a commitment to community service. 186 student-athletes recorded a GPA of 3.0 and above, while 142 were named to the Murray State Dean's List. 52 Racers earned a perfect GPA of 4.0
The Racer baseball and men's cross country teams won the OVC Team Academic Award for having the highest team GPA in the conference. Murray State teams were nationally recognized for their overall team GPA's by the United States Track and Field Collegiate Coaches Association, The National Soccer Coaches Association, The National Golf Coaches Association, The National Fast pitch Coaches Association, and the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association.
The Murray State Department of Athletics was also recognized for academic excellence by being awarded a chapter of Chi Alpha Sigma, the national student-athlete academic honor society.
13 student-athletes were recipients of the OVC's Medal of Honor. The Medal of Honor is awarded to the student-athlete in that sport with the highest overall GPA of any school in the OVC. Racer Medal of Honor recipients were: Jordan Althoff (men's cross country), Alexa Becker (softball), Tyler Beers (baseball), Leslie Bridges (softball), Sophie Hargreaves (soccer), Delaney Howson (women's golf), Allison Karst (women's basketball), Gina Killion (soccer), Becca Lamb (volleyball), Sonja Murphy (soccer), Paul Ritzheimer (baseball), Chelsey Sullivan (softball) and Marc Wynstra (football).
Each year the OVC also recognizes three male and three female student-athletes for their accomplishments for service and academics, with the Scholar Athlete of the Year Award. This year, Murray State men's golfer Hunter York was selected as the recipient of the 2012 Ohio Valley Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Those earning a 3.0 GPA in either the spring or fall of 2012 are listed below:
