The Murray State men's basketball squad said goodbye to the winningest senior class in school history Tuesday evening at the annual MSU Racer Club Banquet at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky.
The group of six seniors included: Jordan Burge (Mayfield, Ky.), Isaiah Canaan (Biloxi, Miss.), Ed Daniel (Birmingham, Ala.), Brandon Garrett (Phoenix, Ariz.), Latreze Mushatt (Saginaw, Mich.) and Stacy Wilson (Mullins, S.C.).
Four-year seniors Burge, Canaan and Daniel were part of the most successful period in the 88 years of the MSU program. As freshmen in 2009-10, and juniors in 2011-12, they were part of teams that had two 31-win seasons, two Ohio Valley Conference regular season and tournament championships and two wins in the NCAA Tournament. This group won three straight OVC regular season titles, made a trip to the NIT and ultimately won 106 games, more than any class before them.
Garrett and Mushatt were with the Racers for three seasons and totaled a fourth-best 75 wins, while Wilson had 52 wins for the fourth-best total for a two-year player.
The annual event features four awards that are named after some of the greats at Murray State.
Mushatt was honored with the Jeff Martin Class & Character Award, named after MSU's all-time scorer. Mushatt showed his tremendous inner drive when he suffered a torn Achilles tendon in July but still battled back to play in 17 games.
Isaiah Canaan was named to the Popeye Jones - Mr. MSU Award that goes to the student-athlete who displayed excellence in all areas on and off the court. Canaan's name is in nearly every category's top-10 at MSU for career and season statistics, but his personality is what will be missed the most. Canaan was a special talent from the moment he put on the Racer uniform as a freshman in 2009 and became a two-time league MVP and All-America.
The Garrett Beshear Defensive Award, named after one of MSU's all-time best defenders, was given to Ed Daniel. Finishing second at MSU in all-time blocked shots, Daniel also drew numerous charges in his senior season. Ed ended as one of 12 MSU players to reach 700 rebounds and he finished with 931 points.
The Racer Hustle Award was given to Stacy Wilson who successfully made the transition from coming off the bench to full-time starter and leader as a senior. Wilson started every game and was particularly good at the end of the season when he averaged 20 points per game at the OVC Tournament and earned a spot on the OVC All-Tournament Team.
Ultimately, the Racers' 2012-13 season didn't end the way MSU wanted it to with a loss in the OVC Tournament title game, but another look at the results shows many great notes for a program that is among the best in all of NCAA Division-I.
The Racers beat St. John's and battled Colorado to the final minutes in the championship game of the Charleston Classic.
MSU took last season's 13-0 road win streak and stretched it to a school record 16-0 with wins at Lipscomb, Evansville and Arkansas State. A loss at Dayton (Dec. 22) stopped this incredible run of road performances.
In going 21-10, MSU now has 26 consecutive winning seasons which is tied with Connecticut for fourth place behind only Syracuse (43), Kansas (30) and Arizona (29).
The Racers had their 28th 20-win season in the 88 seasons in MSU history. MSU's four-straight 20-win seasons ties the school record from 1996-2000.
The Racers recorded the 600th OVC win in MSU history at UT Martin (Jan. 5) and they'll start the 2013-14 season with 1,599 all-time victories.
Head Coach Steve Prohm joins Tevester Anderson as the only MSU coaches to win at least 20 games in their first two seasons and Prohm became the fastest to 50 wins in MSU history with a win over Morehead State (Feb. 20).
