Murray State University Athletics has announced plans for RACERHOOPALOOZA on Aug. 15-16 with the first guest of honor being former coach Mark Gottfried.
Â
RACERHOOPALOOZA is an opportunity for Racer fans to participate in a late summer reunion for Racer men's basketball while also raising funds for the program.
Â
"We've had two men's basketball reunions in the last five years during the winter months," said Paul Bubb, MSU Associate AD for External Affairs. "But many of our former players couldn't make it back during the school year and asked if we might do something in the summer. We decided to expand on the reunion and actually have a couple of events that were not only for the basketball alumni but also our great Racer fans."
Â
Bubb defines RACERHOOPALOOZA as "a large gathering of the Racer Nation to celebrate the success and tradition of Racer Basketball."
Â
This year's RACERHOOPALOOZA, sponsored by CFSB, will feature a Thursday evening dinner (Aug. 15) at the CFSB Center and a "Toast" to former Racer coach Mark Gottfried. Currently the head coach at North Carolina State of the Atlantic Coast Conference, Gottfried left his mark on MSU Basketball from 1995-98. His teams were 68-24 in three seasons which included two trips to the NCAA Tournament and one to the NIT.
Â
The dinner will feature Gottfried speaking about his days at Murray State after being introduced by four guest "Toasters", including Racer Head Coach Steve Prohm, Racer Insider Editor Lindy Suiter, former Gottfried assistant and MSU associate athletic director Darron Boatright (now at Wichita State) and a former player.
Â
A social hour and silent auction of select Racer basketball memorabilia begins at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. Â The program will take place after the buffet dinner.
Â
On Friday (Aug. 16) the basketball team is hosting a scramble golf tournament at the Murray Country Club, with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Foursomes will be assigned a fifth Racer Celebrity to play with each group.Â
Â
In addition to Coach Gottfried, former head coaches Tevester Anderson, Scott Edgar and Ron Greene are also planning to attend. More former Racer coaches may be added. Proceeds from both events will raise additional support for the men's basketball program at Murray State.
Â
Dinner reservations for Thu (Aug. 15) are $65 per person or $490 for a table of eight. Golf scramble reservations are $65 per person or $235 for a foursome. Each foursome will have a fifth player, either a former coach or player, assigned to their team.
Â
Reservations may be made by stopping by the MSU Ticket Office in the CFSB Center, Monday – Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., or calling (270) 809-3000.
