Murray State head women's basketball coach Rob Cross has announced the hiring of Daphne Mitchell for the position of assistant coach. Mitchell takes over for Victoria Jones, who departed Murray last month to become the head coach at Eureka in Illinios.
"We are thrilled to add Daphne to the Racer family," said Cross. "She is one of the brightest young coaches in the game today and will be a tremendous help to our student-athletes. Daphne had a terrific playing career in the ACC at Georgia Tech and as a professional. Her ability to relate to people will make it easy for her to become instrumental in the development of our current student-athletes as well as those young women that we want to bring to Murray State in the future. Her ties to some of the top recruiting areas in the country, along with her tremendous organizational skills and work ethic will enable her to become a huge asset to Racer women's basketball."
Mitchell, a native of East Point, Ga., comes to Murray after spending last season as an assistant at Jacksonville. While Mitchell may be new to MSU, she is no stranger to the OVC, having helped lead Tennessee Tech to a Women's Basketball Invitational appearance during the 2011-12 season.
"I am honored to have the opportunity to join Coach Cross and his staff at Murray State," said Mitchell. "There's a foundation of excellence here with Racer women's basketball and the support shown to student-athletes both on and off the court is second to none. I am excited to join this program, university and community."
Prior to coaching, Mitchell enjoyed a successful career as a player at Georgia Tech. During her time as a Yellow Jacket, she played in 108 career games form 2004-08 and in 2006, Mitchell was honored by the ACC for her work in the Atlanta community with the Top Six for Service award.
After graduating Georgia Tech in 2008 with a bachelor's in business management, Mitchell saw the world as a professional, playing for teams on two different continents in four different countries. She has played for clubs in Ecuador, Finland, Spain and most recently for Clube Desportivo Torres Novas in Portugal.
Mitchell, who began duties on July 8, will round out Cross' staff that also includes current assistants Tony Cross, Benita Buggs and Morgan Harrington.
