After helping lead Murray State to a thrilling come-from-behind victory over Missouri State, quarterback Maikhail Miller was honored as the co-newcomer of the week by the Ohio Valley Conference, while wide receiver/return specialist Walter Powell was voted as the co-specialist of the week.
Miller earned his first weekly honor after sparking the Racers with a big second half. He finished the game by going 24-of-33 for 275 yards and a career-best five touchdowns, without throwing an interception. Miller threw four of his touchdown passes in the second half, including leading the Racers on a game-winning 75-yard drive in the game's final minute to seal the victory.
With the Racers trailing by four with 2:55 showing on the clock, Miller led the Racers down the field to the Bears 15-yard line. Three-straight completions saw Miller and the Racers facing a 4th-and-10. Miller took the snap on the fourth-down play and threw a perfect fade to Powell in the back corner of the endzone with 23.8 remaining, The drive marked the first game-winning drive in the final minutes in the Chris Hatcher era at MSU.
The duo of Miller and Powell connected on four touchdowns in the game, including two in the fourth quarter that came on fourth-down plays. The two hooked up on a 37-yard touchdown in the first quarter. On the opening drive of the second half, Miller found Janawski Davis for a 52-yard touchdown pass. Later in the quarter, Miller and Powell connected on a 66-yard strike down the middle of the field. The third Miller to Powell touchdown came in the fourth quarter on a double-reverse pass on 4th-and-goal from the four.
Powell earned his honor after sparking the second-half comeback by returning the second-half kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown. The return was his first kickoff return for a touchdown, after returning two punts for touchdowns a season ago. He finished the day with 151 return yards on three returns. He also added 11 catches for 155 yards to finish with 306 all-purpose yards.
Powell became the first Racer to account for five touchdowns in a game since Marcus Harris caught five touchdown passes against Missouri State in 2010.
