After helping lead the Racers to an overtime victory over Jacksonville State, Murray State sophomore quarterback Maikhail Miller was selected as the Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced Sunday.
Miller did the majority of his damage on the ground as he rushed for 134 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 24 carries. He also went 14-for-26 for 109 yards and a touchdown.
Miller led the Racers into the endzone for the first time in the first quarter as he hit Walter Powell over the middle for a 29-yard touchdown pass. Â
The Racers took the ground from that point as they rushed for 296 yards and three touchdowns on 58 carries. Facing a fourth-and-short early in the fourth quarter, Miller went over right end for a 14-yard touchdown to give the Racers the lead.
In overtime, the Racers faced a 4th-and-10. Miller took the snap and found Jeremy Harness for a 13-yard gain and the first down. Four players later, Miller went up the middle for two yards to convert a 4th-and-1. On the next play, Miller followed the middle of the line for the one-yard touchdown run.
Instead of kicking the extra point, the Racers went for the two-point conversion and the win. Miller rolled right and found Harness in the endzone for the game winner.
In his first five games as a Racer, Miller has led the Racers on a pair of game-winning drives. He led the team on a 75-yard drive in the final minute against Missouri State, hitting Powell on a 15-yard touchdown on fourth down.
Miller ranks second on the team with 281 yards and two touchdowns on 55 carries. As a passer, he is 93-for-144 for 900 yards and 10 touchdowns. He has also caught a five-yard touchdown pass.
