For the fourth time in the history of Murray State softball, the Racers picked up a big win over a power conference team, knocking off Oklahoma State, 10-6, Saturday on Day 2 of LSU's Tiger Classic at Tiger Park in Baton Rouge. However, in the night cap, the 17th-ranked host LSU overcame an early 2-0 deficit to beat the Racers, 10-2. The split sends MSU back to Murray with a 2-2 record to open the season.
Murray State (2-1) began game one by taking advantage of early miscues by the Cowgirls (2-1) and scored two runs on a pair errors and a pair of walks. With the bases loaded, freshman Maggie Glass made it 4-0 when she doubled to left center, driving in two runs in the process. Jessica Twaddle made it 5-0 in the third when she hit a long single to the left field wall, allowing Casey Castile to cross.
The Racers then used a big fifth inning in which they scored five runs on four hits and an OSU error to put the game out of reach. Castile led off the frame with a single and eventually crossed the plate for a third time in the contest on a single by Glass. Rodgers and Shelbey Miller also had RBI singles in the frame, while Cayla Levins scored on a nice piece of base running by stealing home.
Oklahoma State needed two runs in the bottom of the fifth for the game not to end via the 8-run rule and they were able to find those, as well as two in the sixth and one in the seventh. However, it would not be enough as Mason Robinson and J.J. Francis combined to close out the game in the final three innings and seal the win for the Racers.
CheyAnne Gaskey picked up her second win in as many starts, as she allowed just one run on five hits with three strikeouts over four complete innings. Glass went on to finish the game at 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs, a run and a walk, while Miller also tallied multiple hits by going 2-for-5 with a run and a RBI.
The second game of the day started much like the first for Murray State, as it was able to take advantage of early mistakes by the Tigers. Miller led off the game with a walk, then after two ground outs scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0. In the second, Miller walked again, this time with the bases loaded, to score Leslie Bridges and extend the lead to 2-0.
However, the lead did not hold, as the Tigers quickly tied things up in the bottom of the second with a pair of runs on singles by A.J. Andrews and Jacee Blades. LSU then added one run in the third before busting the game wide open in the fourth with six runs to virtually seal the win.
Alexa Becker and Jessica Twaddle each recorded hits in the game, while Miller ended her night with one run, one RBI and two walks. Gaskey suffered her first loss of the year by allowing four runs on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
Next weekend the Racers will travel to Woodstock, Ga., for four games in Kennesaw State's Phyllis Rafter Memorial Tournament. While in the Peach State, Murray State will take on Akron, Southeastern Louisiana, Northern Kentucky and the host Owls.
