Murray State football alumnus Gil Mains will be inducted into the Kentucky Pro Football Hall of Fame on June 25 in Louisville, the organization announced Thursday. Joining Mains in the 2015 class will be Doug Buffone (Louisville '65), Bruce Armstrong (Louisville '86), Aaron Jones (Eastern Ky. '88) and Jacob Tamme (Kentucky '08).
Mains played tackle for the Racers from 1948-1951, winning three OVC championships and earning All-OVC honors in 1950 and 1951. Following military service, the Mt. Carmel, Illinois native was selected in the 20th round of the 1952 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions. Mains played for the Lions from 1953 to 1961, even winning a NFL Championship in 1957. He was inducted into the Murray State Hall of Fame in 1969.
Proceeds from the 2015 Kentucky Pro Football Hall of Fame Induction ceremony and golf outing will support Kosair Children's Hospital through the Children's Hospital Foundation. Specifically funds raised will go toward pediatric heart care and Brave Hearts, which is a support group of local families united by their children's fight for life after being born with complex congenital heart defects requiring heart surgery.
"Kentucky is the only state in the country with a pro football hall of fame," said Dr. Steve R. Parker, chair of the Kentucky Pro Football Hall of Fame Inc. board of directors. "We're in a unique position to recognize great accomplishments in football, but also have as our main objective to offer financial assistance to organizations that enrich the lives of children."
The official induction ceremony weekend will take place in Louisville, Kentucky, with a ring ceremony on Thursday, June 25 at the Muhammad Ali Center, and golf outing fundraiser at Oxmoor Country Club and the induction ceremony at the Brown Theatre on Friday, June 26.
