Racers Compete In NCAA Regional In Virginia
11/9/2016 3:32:00 AM | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
The Murray State men's and women's teams will compete Friday at the NCAA Cross Country Regional in Earlysville, Virginia. The event will be staged at Panorama Farms, a short distance from the University of Virginia, the host of this year's event.
Friday is race day with the national anthem being played at 9:35 a.m. CT with the women's 6K race starting at 10 a.m. CT and the men's 10K event having an 11 a.m. start.
The Racers last time out was at the Ohio Valley Conference championship (Oct. 29) in Nashville where the women placed sixth and the men eighth.
Mark Ventura and Vallery Korir are MSU's best chances of advancing to the NCAA finals. They were the Racers' top finishers in the OVC's as Korir placed third with a time of 17:18 and was only 15 seconds behind the champion, Ann Asipan of UT Martin. Ventura placed 15th for the Racers with a time of 25:44 and became the first Racer to finish in the top-15 since Ryan Davis placed 11th in 2002.
Racers' head coach Jenny Swieton takes her teams to the NCAA's with high hopes of seeing great performances from her squad.
"I think we are all excited to head to Virginia for regionals," Swieton said. "This is a challenging and beautiful course and it presents a great opportunity for us to race some of the best teams and individuals in the country. We had some great individual performances at OVC championship, but we didn't do as well as I had hoped from a team perspective. This is a chance to show everyone who we really are as a team. But regardless of what happens, I very proud of the season we've had and I couldn't ask for a better group of young men and women to work with at Murray State."
The path to advancing to the NCAA finals is clear. One of MSU's individuals must be among the top-4 runners, not on one of the top four teams. There are also two at-large runners selected for the NCAA finals. The Racers could advance as a team if they placed in the top two.
Panorama Farms, a privately owned farm of 850 acres has been the site of past NCAA Regionals. The property has nine miles of cut grass trails and 30 miles of wooded mountain bike trails. There are two different 5K courses, as well as a 6K, an 8K and a 10K course each with a common starting line and finish line. The courses are laid out entirely on rolling grass fields that are maintained year-round. The courses are exceptionally spectator friendly.
