Racers Sweep Sunday In Kennesaw

The Murray State softball team rebounded from a pair of opening day losses with two wins on Sunday on the final day of the KSU Kickoff Classic at Bailey Park in Kennesaw, Georgia. The Racers began the day by avenging Friday's loss to Loyola Chicago with an 8-1 win over the Ramblers, followed by a 5-0 shutout of East Tennessee State.
In the opener, Loyola was first on the board when Brooke Wyderski homered in the opening stanza. However, from that point on the momentum belonged to the Racers, as they reeled off eight straight runs for the victory.
Jocelynn Rodgers led the hit parade in the game by going-3-for-3 with a home run, her first of the season. Jessica Twaddle was also 3-for-3 in the game, to go along with a double, two runs, two stolen bases, a RBI and a walk. Shelbey Miller had a solid outing for Murray State as well and finished the game at 2-for-4. Together the trio combined for eight of MSU's 11 hits in the contest.
In the second game, the Racers' bats once again came alive, as they tallied eight hits in the 5-0 win. ETSU, however, was not without its chances, coming up with five hits in the game. However, the Murray State defense was able to turn back any thoughts of a rally by the Bucs by turning three double plays in the contest.
Miller went 3-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run, while Maggie Glass was 2-for-3 with three runs, two RBIs and her first home run of the season. Twaddle was just 1-for-4 in the finale, but scored and stole two bases for the second consecutive game.
Mason Robinson won both games in the circle for MSU, allowing just one run on seven hits over 11.0 innings of work. In addition, the junior mowed down eight batters on the day, including seven in the opener. J.J. Francis pitched 3.0 inning of relief for Murray State Sunday and allowed no runs or hits over that time frame.
Murray State returns to action next Saturday and Sunday in the Holiday Inn Hilltopper Classic hosted by Western Kentucky. While in Bowling Green, the Racers will do battle with Missouri State, Austin Peay and the host Hilltoppers.
