Softball Readies For Home/Away Weekend

The Murray State softball team will split time between the friendly confines of Central Park and the road this weekend when they take on Tennessee State and Belmont in a pair of doubleheaders against OVC East opponents. On Saturday, the Racers will host Tennessee State at Central Park at 1 p.m., followed by a trip to Nashville on Sunday to take on Belmont at Rose Park at 12 p.m.
Murray State picked up its first-ever series win at UT Martin this past weekend, when it took the final two games of a three-game set at Giles Field. The Racers dropped the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday in heartbreaking fashion at 1-0, but bounced back with a 4-1 win in game two for their first ever win in Martin. On Sunday, MSU used home runs from Ellyn Troup and Alexa Becker to win the rubber match and capture the series with a 3-2 win.
Mallory Richardson led the Racers in the series with a .400 batting average as she hit her first two collegiate home runs in game two and finished the series with two hits, two runs and two RBIs. Mo Ramsey and Shelbey Miller also had solid weekends as each went 3-for-9 with Ramsey notching two runs and a RBI and Miller tallying one run and two doubles.
CheyAnne Gaskey led the Racer pitching staff in the series by winning game two with a complete game effort and coming in and closing out game three for her second save of the season. Gaskey finished the weekend with a 0.88 ERA and allowed just one run on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
The Racers enter the series with Tennessee State on a five game win-streak in the series and lead the Tigers 6-1 all-time. Murray State is 2-0 all-time against TSU in Murray and is 4-1 in Nashville.
The only loss by MSU in the series came in just the second meeting in 2010 when TSU came away with a 7-5 win in Nashville. The Racers have outscored the Tigers by a total of 77-10 over the life of the series. Murray State currently averages 11 runs per game against TSU, compared to just 1.4 by the Tigers.
The Tigers are currently 11-30 on the season, 2-13 in league action and are currently on an eight-game losing streak. Last weekend, Tennessee State traveled to Eastern Kentucky where they were swept by the Colonels. The Tigers fell in Saturday's doubleheader 9-2 and 13-5, but were just edged in Sunday's finale, 5-3.
Jennifer Givens currently leads the Tigers with a .359 average while, while Audrey Sensing has a team-high 23 RBIs. Pitching wise, Olivia Gamache leads TSU with a 3.61 ERA, while Shea Morris leads the way in strikeouts with 151.
Sunday will be the seventh and eighth meetings all-time between the Racers and Belmont, with Murray State holding a 5-1 advantage. While the Racers and Bruins have met on several occasions prior to this year, this will mark the first time the two teams have met since Belmont joined the league.
The Racers have won each of the last five meetings in the series and have not lost since the first meeting in 2010. Murray State is 1-1 all-time against Belmont in Nashville, 2-0 in Murray and 2-0 at neutral sites.
The Bruins are 13-25 overall this season and 3-13 in OVC play. They have currently lost three games in a row and 10 of their last 11. On Tuesday, Belmont suffered a non-conference setback when they fell 4-0 at Western Kentucky.
Kat Hollingsworth currently leads the Bruins in most major hitting categories with a .375 batting average, 26 runs, 12 doubles, eight home runs and 34 RBIs. Carolyn Snodgress currently leads the Belmont pitching staff with a 3.14 ERA and 64 strikeouts and is also 4-7 on the year.
